Who Designed Your Business Website?

The more research into local small business websites I do, the
madder I get! I am mad at these so-called local web designers who pass themselves off as "Search Engine Optimization Experts", basically ripping you off for some big bucks! Better than 80% of the websites I look at have serious SEO deficiencies, or worse yet, none at all! How do they get away with that? Charging unsuspecting, good intentioned local small businesses of big bucks seems like the law of the land around Tucson. For this, I am angry! I have
nothing but sympathy for the small business owners in town who understood the importance of having a web presence, went through the process to have a website built for their business, thinking it would do them good and increase business, just to end up putting their faith in some fast talking swindler who was looking to make a fast, easy buck. Sure, the website may look fantastic, but building a website goes WAY BEYOND just adding a logo, some fancy, flashy pictures and your contact information! Man….I feel like screaming….WAKE UP TUCSON!! DON’T PUT UP WITH THIS!!

I have found many things that are alarming during my research
into local small businesses, but the most alarming of them all is to find out how many ineffective, unproductive, non-profiting websites are out there. Honestly, I earlier state 80%, but even that is most likely an understatement.

Stop for a second, think back and ask yourself….

1.) When you first made the decision to get a website, what
were your intentions for it? Maybe…..

  • To promote my business, my products or my services?

  • To expand my business beyond the 4 walls I have now?

  • To drive traffic and new customers to my business?

  • To offer my customers a better shopping experience and
    better customer care?

  • To make a profit from my website?

  • To brand my business or service in the minds of existing
    and potential customers?

2.) Be totally honest now, Have any of your original
expectations been met or exceeded? Not many I bet!

3.) Have you laid out a hefty sum of money to have this dream
of a website built? Did it pay off?

4.) Do you work for your website, instead of having your
website work for you?

5.) When was the last time your website was update? Does the copyright still say 2003?

Now, ask your self this: "Would you buy a new 2009 jaguar, with no engine? Turn the key and nothing happens….but man…does it look good!

Isn’t that how you feel about your website? It looks real nice, but it doesn’t work!!

Chances are:

It was built in a way that Google, MSN, Yahoo search engines can not find it in local searches…such as "in frames, or in JavaScript" or it has a lot of Flash built into it. Search Engines DO NOT pick up sites that are built in frames. They CAN NOT read JavaScript. It’s VERY HARD for them to Read Flash!

It has no SEO techniques built in….meaning even the simplest of techniques such as "MetaTags" that help guide search engines & point them to your site, or content on your site, are NOT installed, or are incorrectly done so, rendering them ineffective.

It has many images and very little text. Google CAN NOT read images! There are ways around this, but only an experienced SEO expert would know how to make these work in your favor, and not be a hindrance to your website performance. And with little or no actual text that is relevant to your keywords, there is no correlation that the search engines can follow to find your website.

Which leads me to....
"Proper Keyword usage". Keywords are what the search engines
"Key In On" to distinguish your site from other websites. Having
the proper keywords in your MetaTag that correlate to "Keyword rich
text" that you have on your pages, increases your search engine
rankings, which increase your exposure to new customers, which leads to more profits!! Get the picture?

Without these SEO techniques, your website is sitting there, not being found in searches, not working for you, not driving in customers and sales. It’s ineffective, unproductive an non-profiting….

Tip #1:
DO NOT go back to the person or company that built your website in the first place. If they knew anything about true web design, and what it takes to make a functional, producing, profitable website in the first place, you wouldn’t be in this position now! If you do go back.....Punch them square in the nose first!!!.

Tip #2:
If you want to have a website built or SEO work done on your website, investigate your "designer" first. DO NOT judge only the appearance! Ask if they know how to get you on at least page 3 of Google. If they say YES, try doing a search for them before you commit to anything. If their own website is not on page 1 or 2 of Google in basic searches for “Tucson Web Design”, or “Tucson SEO”, what in the world would lead you to believe that they can do it for you????

Tip #3:
If you want to, or need to have a website built, NEVER give full payment upfront, under any circumstances!! Make a list of what you want. Of how it is to look, of how it should perform and how you expect it to be found in search engines. Offer no more than 50% payment to start the job, with 25% of the remaining balance at physical completion of the website, then the remaining 25% balance should be paid no less than 60 days after completion. This will give your website enough time to propagate into the search engine systems so you can see first hand how Google is reading your site. If you are not happy with the results, demand it to be fixed before forking over the balance of monies owed. An honest, reputable SEO firm or web design firm will not hesitate a minute to meet your demand.

There are many companies claiming to be "SEO Experts" in Tucson. RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH!!! I have tried this many times, and was astonished to find that most of those so called SEO experts, even in the most basic of searches such as “Tucson SEO”, can be found before page 10-15 of a Google search for their own companies!! Most times I am left shaking my head, wondering how they stay in business.

A website for your business is an extension of your business and reflects greatly on you, your business reputation and your customer relations. If you fall into the category of having been one of those unfortunate small business owners who where "taken for a ride", and are the proud owners of a non-performing, non-productive, non-prosperous website, hope is not lost!
